At Horses for Hearts, we care for more than 30 horses at any given time. As you can imagine, each horse has its own unique and special story. Some we know in great details and others we know far less about. And while knowing their past can help us with how to handle and care for them, our number one priority is that their future is a happy one.
Strider is a 13-year-old Thoroughbred/Quarterhorse cross that came to us from Texas. His previous owner had left him in a pasture by himself for months without checking on him and without providing proper feed and water. The neighbor saw him one day, his ribs showing and clearly in distress, and she convinced the owner to let her take Strider away and find him a new home. He needed some time and patience to recover and that’s how he ended up with us. He’s a sweetheart of a guy, loves carrots, and is a good arena riding horse if he doesn’t get worked too hard. He still needs some extra attention to his feet from time to time, but he has potential to be a great lesson or companion horse for someone.
He is available for adoption to the right home for a small donation to Horses for Hearts.
Max is around 14-years-old. We rescued Max from a Kill Shelter in Texas in May of 2024. He was in bad shape. Severely underweight and with hoofs that hadn’t been trimmed in a long time, he struggled to move without difficulty or pain. Fortunately, he regained his weight relatively quickly after we started feeding him well. The feet are taking longer, but we continue to help him get better. He can walk around the place without pain, so while he’ll never be a race horse, he has a good life ahead of him as a pet. He is a sweet natured and chill kinda guy, which is why he has special privileges around here, including the freedom to go wherever he wants on the property.
Max is not available for adoption at this time, but would love someone to sponsor some carrots or special boots for his sore feet.
Honey came to us from the same Kill Shelter as Max. She is about 6-years-old and will make a patient person a very good horse some day. It was clear from Day 1 that she had not been treated kindly wherever she came from and it took some time for her to trust people. She is still a work in progress, but has no problem coming up to people for a scratch or a cookie.
Honey Is available for adoption to the right home for a small donation to Horses for Hearts.
A young mustang, Star is all grace, beauty and personality. And we’re pretty sure she knows it. Out of the South Steens HMA, Star came to us as a 2-year-old from the great Teens and Oregon Mustangs program where she had already received her initial gentling. While she has not been started under saddle yet, we think she is going to be a great riding horse someday. She LOVES people and will come running up and greet anyone that enters the pasture. She’ll follow you around like a puppy, while prancing, dancing and playing like the toddler she is.
Star is not available for adoption, but would love someone to buy her cookies on a regular basis.
A 8-year-old South Steens Mustang, Teddy has settled into the more domestic herd at Horses for Hearts. He’s a sweet guy that’s easy to be around. He doesn’t get ridden much and still needs more training, but he got a great foundation through the Teens and Oregon Mustangs program and will make someone a great companion someday.
Teddy is not available for adoption but loves when people give him cookies and scratches on the neck.
Although we’re not sure which HMA he came from, Red is a mustang through and through. From the neck brand to his flowing mane to his intelligence and bravery. Red is a been-there-done-that horse that you can put anyone on for a safe and enjoyable ride. Nothing seems to bother this guy, which is why so many of the kids that come around love him so much.
Red is not available for adoption but loves to meet new people.
Mostly retired from work these days, Geronimo has long been a favorite around here. His kind nature and beautiful markings catches everyone’s attention. Geronimo has probably taught more than 100 kids to ride over the years and he can still roll back the years when called upon for a play day or easy trail ride.
Geronimo is not available for adoption, but occasionally needs some extra care that he would love someone to help support.
A beautiful Kentucky Mountain Horse, Rio is a big bundle of joy. He is affectionate and calm, with a temperament to match. On the trail, Rio does best with someone equally calm and in tune with him to gain confidence from. He is a big favorite around here and one of the first horses that catches visitors’ eyes.
Rio is not available for Adoption, but will accept cookies and carrots from anyone he comes into contact with.
